Fracking in Britain’s countryside could be greener than importing gas from the Middle East, according to the government’s climate change advisory body.

The Committee on Climate Change cautiously endorsed the government’s plan to develop a shale gas industry, saying that fracking was consistent with Britain’s carbon targets as long as three conditions were met.

The report is a boost for the emerging fracking industry, which in May won permission to use the technique for the first time since it was temporarily banned in 2011 after causing two small earthquakes.
