Permian Basin rig count resumes climb

The Permian Basin rig count increased by six during the past week, the latest count from Baker Hughes shows.

The total number of rigs active in the region was 218. Nationally, the oil and gas rig count increased by 12 to 569. A year ago, 771 rigs were active.

Rigs targeting oil increased by nine during the past week to 450, while rigs targeting natural gas increased by three to 117. Two were listed as miscellaneous. All of the rigs in the Permian Basin targeted oil.

The regional benchmark Plains-West Texas Intermediate Posting ended Friday at $40.50 per barrel. National benchmark West Texas Intermediate ended at $44.07 per barrel.
